2011 - Brooklyn Bridge Park - Warming Hut  BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK, WARMING HUT BROOKLYN, NY The Warming Hut at Brooklyn Bridge Park is a complete renovation and re-programming of an existing 7,200 s.f. two-story mechanical building located at the head of Pier 6. This entry point to the park will act as an information center and café. The second story is being removed and that space will be transformed into an observation roof terrace with views over the length of the 1.3 mile park, of the Brooklyn Bridge, and the New York skyline. A handicapped ramp wraps the existing concrete block building becoming a new layered skin which provides access to a roof observation deck. The ramp is clad in heavy timber longleaf yellow pine, repurposed from an existing building slated for demolition within the Park. The 3’ by 12’ timbers are placed vertically, the spaces between allow a rhythmic and striated quality of light to play through the skin, animating the ramp floor as one ascends and descends. The access to the observation deck unfurls in a spiral, mimicking the unfolding qualities of the landscape design throughout the park. The existing concrete block skin is left intact, insertions into the skin are made with concrete block of a smaller size so that the old and the new coexist in a dialogue. The interiors of the café space are left honest to the use of the building as an industrial structure. The underlying theme governing the design is that the architecture creates an interwoven experience between the park and the built forms, through a series of diaphanous unfolding spaces which reveal, gesture to, and act as a counterpoint to the bridge, the landforms, the water, the light, and the city beyond. Maryann Thompson Architects, as a member of the Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates team, is the Architect for this structure in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Construction will be completed in summer 2012.

2018 - Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse  Poised on riprap overlooking the water, the boathouse sits along the Pier 5 Uplands of Brooklyn Bridge Park. The one-and-a-half mile long park has transformed the former industrial waterfront into an exemplar of urban landscape design. Providing secure open-air boat storage at grade level, with a multipurpose room and public restrooms on the upper floor, the architecture of the 5,000 SF boathouse is purposeful, economical, and resilient. Galvanized steel, gray fiber cement panels, anodized aluminum grilles, exposed concrete floor, and plywood interior walls are composed to elevate the quality of this prosaic building.

Pier Two at Brooklyn Bridge Park  Built by New York Dock Company in the 1950s and operated by Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Pier 2 is a rehabilitated former shipping and warehousing pier on the East River that has been adapted for recreational use at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Water Lab Playground  The Water Lab includes in-ground spray jets, splashing areas, water chutes, and an Archimedes Screw.

2011 - Jane's Carousel  Brooklyn Bridge Park is now home to an historic and beautifully restored carousel, a gift of Jane and David Walentas. Built in 1922 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, the carousel was purchased in 1984 and painstakingly restored to its original condition. Designated as PTC. No. 61, it was originally installed in Idora Park in Youngstown, Ohio, then a prosperous steel-making city. Jane's Carousel is a classic 3-row machine with 48 carved horses and 2 chariots. The carousel is located in the Empire Fulton Ferry section of Brooklyn Bridge Park, housed in a new pavilion, designed by Pritzker-prize winning architect Jean Nouvel. The carousel will be operated year-round for the enjoyment of children of all ages.
