The Lower Garden District was designated a historic district in 1975 and expanded in 1976. Surveyor Barthelmy Lafon originally laid out the area in 1809 with the current site of Coliseum Square intended to house an actual coliseum and Annunciation Square intended to house a great cathedral. Single and double shotguns, double gallery houses and commercial structures characterize the district’s architecture.
