Feud caused over Irish immigrant group protesting the low wages caused by an influx of freed slaves as well as the threat of conscription.

Hell-Cat Maggie, the Mythical Dame of the Dead Rabbits Gang  Seated on a back alley staircase is a woman introduced as Hell-Cat Maggie, shown filing her feline teeth to sharp points. Later, in one of the film's many blood-soaked fight scenes, she pounces on a rival gangster with her razor-sharp brass claws and bites his ear off, preserving it with the rest of her battle souvenirs in a bar-top pickle jar. (Her name later inspired a brand of Irish whiskey.)

Directed by Martin Scorsese, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz  In order to create the sets that Scorsese envisioned, the production was filmed at the large Cinecittà Studio in Rome, Italy. Consisting of a five-block area of Lower Manhattan
