50 years ago John and Dominique de Menil founded the Rothko Chapel as a place for spiritual engagement through art and an institution dedicated to social action. ARO’s renewal of the Rothko Chapel building realizes Mark Rothko’s original vision for daylighting with a new skylight, reconfigures the entry sequence, and improves the acoustics within. Its structure was also reinforced, the original brick exterior repaired, the roof replaced, and new flood protection implemented. The second phase of the project creates a new, three-building campus and landscape to support the organization’s mission of outreach and social justice.
