After the Revolutionary War, America’s First Congress met in City Hall (Federal Hall) from 1785 to 1790, the Bill of Rights was written and ratified. 

New York City was the first capital of the United States once the Constitution was ratified. George Washington took the oath of office to become the first President of the United States from the balcony of the old City Hall.

Pierre L’Enfant renovated the building from the former British colonial city hall.
